He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Massachusetts in 1957. Then he went on to earn a M.S. and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1960. He was introduced to Carolyn Osburn through a mutual friend, and then approximately six months later on they w ere engaged. By November, 1959 they married two days after Welchs twenty-fourth birthday.In 1960, Dr. Dan Fox offered Welch a chemical engineering position to lap on a new project on a new thermoplastic called polyphenylene oxide (PPO) at GE.
